In this recent UK project in Finchley, we reimagined a client’s loft space that had lost its purpose. Once intended as a home gym and communal room adjoining the study, it had gradually become an underused and undervalued storage area. It became a stopping point for household objects in limbo, inviting clutter and confusion. But we saw something different: the potential for a warm and inviting retreat, where family members could reconnect and unwind.

Working closely with our client, we redesigned the space as a dedicated cinema snug, perfect for film nights, family time, and quiet moments alone. The primary challenge in the brief was to deliver sharp, life-like imagery on a screen ‘as wide and cinematic as possible’ in a relatively compact room. To achieve this, we integrated the projector in the adjoining study wall behind optical grade glass, with the supporting cabling infrastructure out of sight in the adjacent room. This forward-thinking concept not only projected high-def, vibrant visuals on the full-width screen, it sound-proofed the room for optimal immersive audio conditions. Both the heat and the noise generated by the projector were kept behind the glass on the other side of the wall, increasing the audio dynamic range from a pinprick silence to a thunderous roar, for the ultimate suspension of disbelief. It’s another well-executed project that showcases how you don’t always need a large space to recreate immersive cinematic experiences at home.

The client tells us he now uses the room more than ever, not just for movies, but for reading, relaxing, and listening to music. As he put it: “I’ve accidentally bought an awesome audio system.” His quote was actually more passionately explicit, but we’ve toned it down for our website. With cinema-quality surround sound tied into the home’s central control hub, a simple voice command is all it takes to enjoy high-fidelity audio.

This project is a perfect example of how well-considered design, sophisticated technology, and a little imagination can transform an overlooked room into the most loved space in the home.
