From living room to private cinema
CEDIA Awards finalist for Best Media Room
A bright, welcoming family room designed to transform after dark. At the touch of a button, the lighting softens, the blinds close and a wide-format projection screen descends over the television, creating an intimate cinema without sacrificing the room’s everyday character.
Different scenes shape the experience for family films, children’s viewing and quieter evenings for the adults, adjusting the lighting, shading and entertainment together.
Designed for day and night
During the day, the space remains bright, open and connected to family life. A 55-inch OLED television sits within bespoke cabinetry, surrounded by display shelving and integrated feature lighting.
Rather than dedicating valuable floor space to a separate cinema, the room transforms naturally from everyday living into an immersive evening retreat.
Programmed scenes adjust the lighting to suit the occasion. Softer settings create a relaxed atmosphere for family viewing, while darker scenes draw attention towards the screen for films and entertaining.
Lighting, shading and entertainment work together, allowing the room to change character at the touch of a button.
Larger than life experiences
When cinema mode is selected, the room transforms. Blinds and curtains close, the lighting softens and a 2.74 metre CinemaScope screen descends discreetly from within the bespoke joinery.
A concealed Barco projector delivers a cinematic image, while the television disappears behind the screen. The result is a private cinema that feels worlds away from the room's daytime role.
Performance designed into the architecture
The projector is recessed above the seating area, while speakers, equipment and cabling are concealed within the architecture and cabinetry.
A Dolby Atmos 5.1.2 system was designed around the bespoke joinery, with a custom-width Artcoustic soundbar, surround speakers, overhead channels and dual subwoofers integrated discreetly throughout the room.
The result is the scale and clarity of a dedicated cinema, without compromising the calm, residential feel of the space. In 2023, the project was recognised as a CEDIA Awards finalist for Best Media Room and selected as Artcoustic's Installation of the Month.
